If Cappadocia has been on your bucket list, I completely get why. It has been on mine for so many years. It is one of those places that looks almost unreal, with its fairy chimneys, cave hotels and skies filled with hot air balloons at sunrise.
Located in central Turkey, Cappadocia is not just about the views. It is a mix of unique landscapes, history, culture and experiences that you honestly cannot find anywhere else.
In this guide, I am sharing everything you need to know before you go, from where to stay and what to do, to practical tips and a 3 day itinerary to help you plan your trip.
Why Visit Cappadocia?
Cappadocia is one of those destinations that actually lives up to the hype. The landscapes are completely different from anywhere else, with those iconic fairy chimneys and valleys that feel almost surreal. But it is not just about how it looks. Watching hot air balloons rise at sunrise is easily one of the most memorable experiences you can have. Even if you do not go up in one, just seeing them from the ground is incredible.
There is also so much history here. You can explore underground cities carved into the rock, ancient churches and open air museums that date back thousands of years. And of course, the food. Turkish cuisine is one of my favourites, and Cappadocia is the perfect place to try local dishes like kebabs, mezes and fresh gozleme.
When to Visit Cappadocia
The best time to visit is spring from April to June and autumn from September to October. The weather is much more pleasant, which makes exploring a lot easier, and you also have a better chance of hot air balloon flights going ahead.
We visited in October during good weather and it made such a difference. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures and those perfect sunrise views. Summer can get very hot and quite busy, while winter is quieter and more affordable, but comes with colder temperatures and a higher chance of balloon cancellations. My advice would be to aim for spring or autumn if you can, especially if this is your first time.
How to Get to Cappadocia
Getting to Cappadocia is actually easier than it looks. The closest airport is Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport, but most people also fly into Kayseri, which is about an hour away and that is exactly what we did. You can take a short domestic flight (1h 15m) from Istanbul, which is what most people do, and then arrange a transfer to your hotel.
There are also buses from major cities in Turkey if you are travelling on a budget, and trains via Ankara, but flying is by far the easiest option.
Where to Stay in Cappadocia
Choosing where to stay can make a big difference to your experience. Göreme is the most popular base and for a good reason. It is close to most of the main attractions, has plenty of restaurants and offers some of the best views. It was my favourite area to stay in, but you can get more budget options elsewhere.
Ürgüp is a bit quieter and has more boutique style hotels, while Avanos is known for its pottery and feels more local. Cappadocia is famous for its cave hotels, and I would definitely recommend staying in one if you can. It is part of the whole experience. Cappadocia offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious cave hotels with amazing views.
Budget Hotels in Cappadocia
If you are travelling on a budget, there are still some really nice cave hotel options that give you that full Cappadocia experience without spending too much.
- Roc of Cappadocia – from £66
Located in Göreme, this is a great affordable option with a rooftop terrace and beautiful views over the valley. - Milat Cave Hotel – from £67
Also in Göreme, this one has a very cosy cave feel and a nice terrace for sunrise views. - Elite Cave Suites – from £76
A slightly more modern cave hotel, still centrally located in Göreme with easy access to everything.
Mid-Range Hotels in Cappadocia
If you want something a bit more comfortable with better design and views, this is the range I would personally go for.

If you want the full experience, Cappadocia does luxury really well. Many of these hotels are built into historic cave dwellings, combining traditional architecture with modern comfort, which is what makes staying here so unique.

My Tip
If it is your first time in Cappadocia, I would stay in Göreme and choose a cave hotel with a terrace view. Waking up and seeing the hot air balloons from your hotel is honestly one of the best parts of the whole trip, and you do not even need to leave your room for it. Especially for the first time visitors staying in a cave hotel is a must, trust me it will make your trip even more magical.
Things to Do in Cappadocia
There are so many amazing things to do in Cappadocia, and it is definitely more than just the hot air balloons. These are the best experiences I would recommend, especially if it is your first time visiting.
Hot Air Balloon Ride
This is the most iconic experience in Cappadocia and something you have probably seen all over Instagram. Flying over the fairy chimneys at sunrise is honestly unreal and gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape. If it is within your budget, I would 100% recommend doing it. Just make sure to book in advance, especially during peak season, as it sells out quickly. Also I would recommend to book for your first morning in Cappadocia, so if the weather is bad you get the chance to go in the next few days.

Sunrise Balloon Watching
If you do not want to spend the money on a balloon ride, watching them from the ground is still equally incredible. You can go to a sunrise viewpoint or even just watch from your hotel terrace in Göreme. Seeing the sky fill with balloons is such a special experience.

Red Valley and Rose Valley Hike
These were some of my favourite places in Cappadocia. The landscapes are beautiful, especially at sunset, and the hikes are not too difficult, so they are suitable for most people. It is a great way to experience the scenery up close.

Visit Göreme Open Air Museum
This is one of the most popular attractions in Cappadocia and definitely worth visiting. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient rock-cut churches and frescoes that give you a glimpse into the region’s history.
Explore Underground Cities
Cappadocia is famous for its underground cities, and visiting one is such a unique experience. You can walk through tunnels and rooms that were once used as shelters thousands of years ago.

ATV Sunset Tour
If you want something a bit more adventurous, an ATV tour at sunset is a great option. You drive through valleys and viewpoints while the landscape changes colours, which makes it even more special.
Horseback Riding in the Valleys
Cappadocia is also known as the “Land of Beautiful Horses”, so this is a really fun way to explore the area. Riding through the valleys, especially at sunset, feels like something out of a movie.
Visit Uchisar Castle
This is the highest point in Cappadocia and offers amazing panoramic views over the whole region. It is a short climb to the top, but the views are definitely worth it.

If you have seen those famous Cappadocia photos with carpets and colourful setups, this is where they are taken. It is a great spot if you want something a bit more unique for your photos.
Wine Tasting Experience
Cappadocia has a long history of winemaking, and it is a great place to try local wines. This is a more relaxed activity, perfect after a busy day of exploring.
Tips for Visiting Cappadocia
- Book your hot air balloon in advance, especially if you are travelling in peak season.
- Wear comfortable shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking and exploring.
- Bring layers, as mornings and evenings can be cold even in warmer months.
- Learn a few basic Turkish phrases, it goes a long way.
- And if you are shopping in markets, do not be afraid to bargain a little.
The Best Views in Cappadocia
One of the best things about Cappadocia is how many incredible viewpoints there are. Hotel terraces in Göreme are perfect for watching the balloons in the morning. Many hotels have rooftop areas with direct views over the valleys.
The sunrise viewpoint above Göreme is another popular spot. It does require a bit of a climb, but the views are worth it. Just expect it to be busy.
Uchisar Castle offers some of the best panoramic views in the region and is definitely worth visiting.
One of my favourite spots was a quieter viewpoint near the rock formations opposite Grand Goreme Cappadocia Resort. It was much less crowded but still had amazing views of the balloons.
Must visit restaurant in Cappadocia for Sunset views and good food without breaking bank
When in Cappadocia you wanna enjoy a nice dinner with sunset over the fairy chimneys. The best one we found was definitely Seten Restaurant, which has a beautiful terrace with those stunning Goreme views.
Seten does not accept booking, so I suggest you come for early dinner before sunset. We went around 5:30 and didn’t have to wait at all for the table. Food is amazing, they offer traditional Turkish dishes, particular for the region without breaking the bank.
Our bill for 2 people having starters, mains, desserts and drinks was around TL1500 (£39) for a really yummy dinner, which is less than what we paid in other restaurants in Cappadocia minus the views. Mixed appetiser tray, which you can see on the video, was amazing.
If you are lucky like me, a local cat will come to wish you to enjoy your meal during your time.
How Many Days Do You Need in Cappadocia?
I would say at least 3 full days. This gives you enough time to do a hot air balloon ride (don’t forget to book this for your first morning), explore the valleys, visit key attractions and still enjoy your hotel without rushing. It is also important because balloon flights are weather dependent, so having an extra day gives you a backup option. If you have more time, 4 to 5 days would be even better for a more relaxed trip.

Is Cappadocia worth visiting?
Yes, it is one of those places that really lives up to the hype. The landscapes and experiences are completely unique.
Is 2 days enough for Cappadocia?
It is possible, but it will feel rushed. Three days is a much better minimum, especially in case your balloon flight gets cancelled.
Are hot air balloons in Cappadocia worth it?
If your budget allows, yes. It is a very unique experience and gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape. Also there is no other place where you will see 100+ hot air balloons in the sky almost every day. It is absolutely magical.
Why do hot air balloons get cancelled?
Usually because of wind conditions. Safety is taken seriously, so flights only go ahead when it is safe. They fly in average 200-330 times per year depending on the weather.
Where is the best place to stay?
Göreme is the best option for first time visitors because of its location and views.
